Street Art Farce?

skullphone.jpg

The above photo of Skullphone’s reported billboard hack ended up being a paid for ad (as reported by Wired Magazine). I guess it pays to do your fact checking before reporting.

Many museums, including the Walker (check out the images below), have bought billboards to place art on. I have to admit, I’m not bothered by him paying for it. Does it bother you? Do you think it’s still art of it’s paid for commercial space?

I like analog

In less than a year on February 17 ,2009 I will no longer have the pleasure of using my antenna to try to get TPT

The move to digital gets me down.. I love analog..

Anyways here is what I am going to try to tune into tonight…

St. Paul Neighborhood Network (SPNN 15) viewers: “Our World In Depth” cablecasts in St. Paul on Tuesday evenings at 5pm, after Democracy Now!, and midnight and Wednesday mornings at 10am. All

households with basic cable may watch.

Do teens only see out of focus and in slow-motion?

paranoid.jpg

Yes! At least thats what writer and director Gus Van Sant says in his Paranoid Park, his adaptation of Blake Nelson’s novel.

This movie is the next in a series of movies that Gus Van Sant has made since he supposedly “broke out of Hollywood.” It follows the story of Alex, a teenager (more like tween); who is supposedly disconnected, like you know most teens are nowadays, and I guess for that reason can’t seem to formulate a sentence that includes more than a subject and a verb.

If you want to know more, then keep reading!

JUXTAPROGRAMS

For those of you who don’t know, JUXTAPOSITION ARTS is a community based organization that involves youth from the Twin Cities in art making classes, mural projects, and gives them resources to be heard in their community. Juxta has even given me a break, and I can vouch for them being great.

All of their programs are FREE for youth ages 8-21!

This spring/summer, the programs will consist of:

$60,000?

Daisy.jpg

I was once told that after you make $60,000 a year your level of happiness goes up. Now I don’t make $60,000 a year … but I had a hard time agreeing with this. I also was recently shopping at the Wedge and I brought my own bags when I was checking out they informed me that if you bring your own bags you can

1. get money off your purchase

or

2. Donate that saved money to the community garden

I decided to donate to the community garden and as I was walking home I couldn’t help but thinking about someone being able to plant seeds that my possible contribution helped. Which I thought was really interesting when I stumbled across an article today about how people who donate or buy gifts for others are happier.

So the old saying, “it’s better to give than to receive” is correct. Click for full article

I think Dosh sounds like Mozart.

So heres a nifty happening at the Walker. Dosh, that loopster around town is making an appearance at the Walker along with some of his friends. Now, Dosh has gained some acclaim for not only his fascinating surreal sound, but also for his little superstar friends such as Andrew Bird. So it follows that Andrew Bird will be joining him for this soirée (and playing Rock the Garden in June!)

YouTube Preview Image

Its more than a month away, so be sure to mark your calendars. Heres the lowdown: The World of Dosh– Martin Dosh and Friends at 8pm on May 3rd. $20. Yeah, its expensive and its a Saturday but it’ll be one of those things where you can say “yeah, I was there. No big deal.”

CrimethInc Convergence

convergence.jpg

This summer’s CrimethInc. convergence will occur July 16 to 20, in or near Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

I wanted to attended the convergence in 2007 which I think took place in Winona but was in the BWCA. Has anyone ever attended one or know someone who has attended? Sounds interesting. For more info check their website and for more info on past events check this article

If it’s on the news its been leaked.

If you’ve switched on the news recently, or at least opened up to the first couple of pages in the Strib you’ve noticed that there is always a lot of stuff happening around the world. But if you know anything about the media you can bet your fine gluteus maximus that once a story reaches you it has already been censored once through the reporter, censored through the producers, censored once again by the corporate legal department, and then cropped to fit the time limit in the tv program. This is where Live Leak comes in. Think of it as a youtube with a heavy news focus. Lets examine the recent riots in Belgrade caused by Bosnian independence. If you remember rioters actually broke into the US embassy. Yet for those of us who saw it on regular news channels this is the image we sawYouTube Preview Image If you waited 2 hours after the fact and logged onto Live Leak this is the image you would have seen this. That’s right, this is from INSIDE the US embassy. A word of caution: Live Leak is a great resource for all you aspiring social activists, or just for people who want to get another view on current events. However be careful of forming opinions out of context. By watching simply a raw video on live leak you should also take into account the situation in which the event is taking place and who the people are involved, if not you run the risk of being even more mis-informed than you would be by simply watching the news. Live Leak is a tool, not necessarily the 100% truth.
