These Kids Today

SMIX__b_0900.jpg

THURSDAY MAY 29TH! 7:30!

This inaugual event has been organized by It girl Liana Simonds as a showcase for the young musical talent in the Twin Cities. Unfortunately these fine specimens (above) won’t make it. It’ll be featuring:

Best Friends Forever. I saw these guys in a basement, and let me tell you, they managed to make the Interstate Highway System, Lincoln and that basement seem like the coolest thing in the world.

Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelle’s. A 6 piece (wow!) band that is defined as “folk/fusion/ghettotech”, let me tell you, there are some hotties in this band.

The openers will be the ineffable DJ Relax and Johann. Now these kids are great, you may know them from tooling around the town but now they’ve stopped long enough to open the show.

See you there!

20 Under 20 Graffiti Battle

As part of 20 Under 20, WACTAC’s series of juried art exhibitions, we organized a graffiti battle. To prevent snitchery we didn’t invite the public to watch, but you can see the flicks on Chunderman’s flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24770588@N02/

MC No More

Thanks, audience for not laughing at my jokes, even though they were hilarious. If you’d laughed it would’ve just expanded my ego, which is never a good thang. We are sitting here toiling in St. Paul; we’re counting up all the many ballots (read: we’re making our underpaid intern Emmanuel count the ballots while we, the masterminds behind WACTAC mingle with our judges and crowd). Aboot to announce the weiners! See you all L8R!

“Think Tank”

Danielle.jpg

The Minnesota Center for Book Arts has created a program similar to the WACTAC! It’s goal is too form a council which helps the By Design program work more efficiently. It has three seasons, summer, fall, and spring, and hopes to bridge teen art making at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts with other teens and the artistic community. Click here for more info.

By Design Exhibtion at MCBA

JavierPaint.jpg

We have been so busy planning and hosting our 20 Under 20 exhibition that we haven’t had time to plug the By Design exhibition of high school artists at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. By Design is a really awesome program where you can learn a variety of artistic processes that relate to making books - printmaking (screenprinting, letterpress, and more), paper making, and other great things that you could only get your hands on through MCBA.

So after you check out their exhibition, consider applying for the By Design program. Over and out.

Raising the Barr

In luv with Cali? Welcome to the club. Club Med that is.
(Insert Segue here)
Barr, a certain Brendan Fowler who is from none other than LA, spouts wisdoms through spoken word in an effeminate stage demeanor backed by loud-asz beats. (and he’s cute too)

Shop at the Walker

Gap and the Whitney Museum of American Art have teamed with some of my favorite artists to create some cool Tee’s for Men and Women. I am very excited that today I went to the Walker Art Center instead of ordering offline or dragging myself into my local gap store to purchase my Marilyn Minter Tee.

Featured artists tees are :

Hanna Liden

Chuck Close

Jeff Koons

Marylin Minter

Kenny Scharf

Glenn Ligon

Sarah Sze

Kiki Smith

Barbara Kruger

I must admit I am not one to usually enjoy art and retail or art and advertising but after I heard the Walker was selling the shirts and it benefited the museum, I was on board. All the shirts sold at the Walker benefit the museum, and they are the same exact price as Gap!The shirts are 100% cotton, they run kinda large..and they are super soft.$28 dollars and you can have your favorite art on a shirt.

Chupa Cat

I’m having a go at ceramics this semester. Here’s my favorite piece so far. It’s an abstracted sculpture of a cat and it was featured in the 2008 Minnesota State Visual Arts Exhibition.

Modern Radio at First Amendment

stnnng.jpg

Saturday May 24 - July 8, 2008
MODERN RADIO’S 9 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
First Amendment Arts
1101 Stinson Blvd, Basement rooms A & B
Northeast Minneapolis (612) 379-4151

Grand opening Saturday May 24, 6-10pm
All Ages
Free admission 6-8pm // $5 from 8-10pm

This show marks the opening of events for the 9 year anniversary celebration of Twin Cities record label, Modern Radio. Starting at 6pm, the First Amendment Arts gallery will be featuring posters, flyers, photos, records and artwork from the history of the record label, home to rock groups STNNNG, The Plastic Constellations, Vampire Hands, Signal to Trust, and many others.

Local photographers Carl Wedoff, Adam Bubolz, Sharyn Morrow and Greg Schaal will display photographs covering nine years of live rock shows in the Twin Cities and beyond. Also on display will be screenprinted concert posters from Aesthetic Apparatus, Burlesque of North America, Tom Stack, Dan Black/Landland, Neil Fasen, and several othes. The gallery is set to celebrate the creative people behind the last 9 years of this Twin Cities record label, and it wouldn’t be a First Amendment gallery opening without some live entertainment!

Performing at the celebration will be Togetherness, featuring photographer Carl Wedoff (also of Malachi Constant). Togetherness play catchy and carefree Euro synth pop. Also performing are The Carrots, straight out of Austin, TX. Carrots bassist Chris Lyons is also is well known for his Gene Defcon project which released a 7″ on Modern Radio, not to mention their releases on K, Retard Disco, and Lookout! The Carrots play ’50s girl group / soul-influenced pop. The show will be rounded out by local DJ Jonathan Ackerman of the Moon Goons crew, so dancing should definitely be happening.

Robert Rauschenberg Dies

rauschenberg_retroactive_sm.jpg

I am extremely saddened that one of my favorite artists of all time died today. Robert Rauschenberg was a pioneer, a visionary, and one of the greatest artists of the last decade. Throughout his years, Rauchenberg pushed the definition art and blurred the lines of the categories that separated painting, sculpture, and dance. In memoriam, take some time and check out his prolific body of work that spans over 60 years. Here’s an article in today’s NY Times.
