The Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC) presents the 2010 Student Open House: Street Level.

From posters and graffiti to stencils and wheat pasting, this year’s Student Open House draws on the open air galleries of the streets. Stop in to check out a film, artist talk, or to create your own mud graffiti at the Walker!

Art-Making: Mobile Murals

Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab, 5-9

Juxtaposition Arts, a non-profit arts organization for youth based in North Minneapolis, will be leading a graffiti-inspired activity with t-shirts and stencils. Come check out this cool organization, and take a look at the other opportunities and classes they offer here.

Art-Making: Mud Messages

General Mills Hennepin Lounge, 5-9

Jesse Graves and Nicholas Lampert of Just Seeds, a multinational collective of artists concerned with social activism, will be replacing paint with mud in an original stenciling activity that you won’t want to miss! What is mud stenciling? Check out these photos of stenciling in Milwaukee.

Music: Those Meddling Kids

Cargill Lounge, 5-9

Radio K’s Those Meddling Kids will be the soundtrack for the evening, so stop by to hear these high school DJ’s at work. Along with an eclectic musical selection, expect some cool giveaways!

Artist Talk: Swoon

Cinema, 6:30

Famed street artist Swoon will talk about her enthusiasm for creating the wheatpaste prints and cut-paper figures that have been popping up in cities across the country.

Swoon will also discuss her experience as part of the Miss Rockaway Armada, a group of artists who came to Minneapolis back in 2006 to float their rafts made from found materials down the Mississippi. Check out this video of one of Swoon’s raft projects in New York. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to see Swoon in person!

Film: Next: A Primer on Urban Painting

Director Pablo Aravena explores the culture of graffiti-based visual art in this documentary that profiles the influence of American city street art in 9 different countries around the world. The film shows the complexity and innovative spirit of this significant movement by documenting real-life moments and interviews with painters, journalists, collectors, sociologists, DJ’s, art critics and other participants within the subculture. The works of legendary street artists like Doz Green, Banksy, Delta, Sasu, and Swoon are highlighted.
